Women's Only Mini 10K Fundraising Blitz

UPDATE: You all are amazing! Thanks to your generous support, I managed to hit my goal of $500 in a single day! Because there's still plenty of time before the race, I've updated my goal to $1000. Please, if you haven't donated already, consider taking the time to support this amazing cause. Small donations, even $5 or $10, can really make a difference. Thanks again for the support that you've already shown!

A month ago, my best friend, Lauren Massi, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is twenty five years old. I can't pretend to have any idea what that feels like. (If you want to glimpse into her world, she's writing an amazing blog at whenboobsbetray.wordpress.com/.) I do know that she has handled this news with the strength and grace and determination that makes her the wonderful woman that I have known since day one at Penn State.

Cancer is a big word, and one that's hard for anyone to hear. To hear it at twenty five is especially unexpected. In her words, "There’s childhood cancer and then there’s adult cancer, and being in your mid-20’s doesn’t quite fit into either category. I’m an adult, but this process makes me feel far too young."

When I found Young Survivor's Coalition, it immediately resonated with me. The fact that there is a whole organization that is dedicated to helping women who are battling cancer in this weird space as a young adult. That's amazing.

I am running a Women's Only 10K in Central Park in two weeks to raise money for this amazing cause. (Find more information at nyrr.org/races-and-events/2017/nyrr-new-york-mini-10k.) It seemed appropriate to use this race - designed for women to celebrate all that womanhood means. For the next two weeks, as I train to run this race, I've made an exciting commitment to become a YSC Champion with my campaign: Women's Only Mini 10K Fundraising Blitz. The money I raise will go to support Young Survival Coalition (YSC), the premier non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and educating young women affected by breast cancer.

Each year, more than 13,000 young women 40 and under are diagnosed with breast cancer. I am making the commitment to help raise money to support these women, so they can face breast cancer feeling empowered.

I know I can do it with donations from people like you. How will your contribution help?

$25 could fund YSC materials at three healthcare providers’ offices.
$100 could provide a Newly Diagnosed Navigator to six women when they need it most.
$250 could allow us to train four survivors to serve as peer supporters.
$500 could fund a Young Empowered Survivor (YES) educational program.
$1,200 could pay for two women to travel to our annual conference for young women affected by breast cancer.

I will personally match the first $100 in donations for this cause.

Any amount helps!

Thank you, in advance, for your support. I truly appreciate your generosity.
